Lord of the Dawn The Legend of Quetzalcóatl eBook Rudolfo Anaya David M Johnson

The legend of Quetzalcóatl is the enduring epic myth of Mesoamerica. The gods create the universe, but man must carefully tend to the harmony of the world. Without spiritual attention to harmony, chaos may reign, destroying the universe and civilization.
The ancient Mexicans, like other peoples throughout the world, wrestled with ideas and metaphors by which to know the Godhead and developed their own concepts about their relationship to the universe. Quetzalcóatl came to the Toltecs to teach them art, agriculture, peace, and knowledge. He was a redeemer god, and his story inspires, instructs, and entertains, as do all the great myths of the world.
Now available in paperback, the Lord of the Dawn is Anaya’s exploration of the cosmology and the rich and complex spiritual thought of his Native American ancestors. The story depicts the daily world of man, the struggle between the peacemakers and the warmongers, and the world of the gods and their role in the life of mankind.

Lord of the Dawn The Legend of Quetzalcóatl eBook Rudolfo Anaya David M Johnson Reviews
I don't think he is the best writer. I had problems with his style. But beyond that, I thought it was a strange and simplistic retelling of a powerful myth.
have not read In Too Deep (Hidden Cove Series) as yet - lord of the Dawn fascinating, entertaining and an excellent read
I bought this book because I like Rudolfo Anaya's writing, and to do research for a novel about Mexico City that I'm writing. I find the book enjoyable to read and valuable in my research.
Excellent.
Bottom line if you are interested in the story of Quetzalcoatl you should read this book.
I've been reading up on Mesoamerican Mythology for awhile for a story I'm writing as well. So far I have able to find some books on the subject in English. Unfortunately most of those books (which the exception of translations of the Popol Vuh) are reference books. Books like these give Wikipedia like summaries of the myths and then proceed to analyze the stories, their significance, symbolism, and cultural context. Although this is valuable it's not nearly as... well... fun. Back when I was still in middle school and high school, the best part of studying Greek/Roman Mythology was reading the Greek and Roman Myths - not reading the essays about the Greek and Roman myths.
This book begins with a summary and some analysis of but unlike many books and articles this one tells the story of Quetzalcoatl, Leader and Teacher of the Toltecs, as if it were a story to be enjoyed. And with all that said it is pretty good story. Told in very lucid language, this book made for an easy read.
Sometimes the story drags. The story can be repetitive (which works well orally but can be kind of annoying when written). Sometimes details come almost out of nowhere because they are not that well foreshadowed. Those who read it will find it kind of hard to ignore the parallels between it and the story of Jesus. The legend of the Dawn is the story of God that comes to earth and takes the form of human to understand sin. Yes-- is does in large part follow Joseph Campbell's Hero's Journey.
Despite of the above, the elements of a good story are there characters with clear motivations that drive what they do and who they are, characters with flaws that lead to their downfall, characters with admirable traits that make them likable and eventually lead some since of redemption. Also unlike the Jesus story are some key differences that prevent it from being an exact copy. I don't feel like spoiling them, but it's safe to say that the Jesus story is much more Black & White while the Legend of the Dawn which is much more Yin & Yang.
The things mentioned above are aspects you can't get from reading the back of the book or reading the summary of the story in some encyclopedia. For that I thank Rudolfo Anaya. For that reason I give it 5 stars.
A master story teller. This tale is not well known to the world of the "Americanos" but it is here, now, for our knowledge and the sprit of the legend!
Great book. Extremely well written. I had to buy this for a college class but I've really enjoyed it.
